Submetering is an automated method of recording energy consumption. The time-consuming and resource-intensive reading of electricity meters, for example, can be significantly reduced. In addition, the energy costs can be determined automatically for each individual apartment, which was previously only possible by reading the meter readings in the individual apartments. Landlords of multi-apartment buildings in particular benefit from submetering, as they now automatically and clearly receive the total consumption of the property as well as the share of the individual apartments.

But larger companies with multiple locations also benefit from submetering. The management of energy bills, which are often much more complex, is significantly streamlined and simplified.

The big trend in submetering is smart metering. Here, wireless technology and special gateways are used to determine the respective consumption data for electricity, water, gas, etc. and process it visually. Tenants can thus view their monthly and even daily energy consumption and adjust it if necessary.

The data can be visualized via web portals or specially developed apps. In these apps, end consumers can also be encouraged to further optimize their own energy consumption with useful tips on how to save energy.
